Seven Brothers – A tranquil display about human presence.
“When they had eaten, they sat here and there each thinking of something or looking at the book open before him. Near the rear window, which looked west, sat Aapo, fussing with his pipe and apparently in serious thought.” (A . Kivi, Seitsemän veljestä)
Aleksis Kivi’s novel Seitsemän veljestä (1870) is one of the most notable novels in Finnish Literature. The novel follows the lives of seven orphaned brothers, young men, in the 19th century countryside Finland. During ten years, they build houses, farm land, hunt animals, wrestle, have sauna, learn how to read and tell each other compelling stories.
The performance Seven Brothers, premiering in June 16th 2018, illustrates the milieu of the seven brothers’ house at one ordinary summer evening. Seven Brothers is an honest, tranquil performance that fixates on human presence.
Though it may seem that nothing happens, plenty is happening all the time. Insignificant, simple action or sound can suddenly turn into immensely meaningful and complex. The human presence makes ordinary moments interesting.
In order to underline the human presence, the performance is stripped in every possible way. The performance has no electric lighting, make-up or role costumes. Also, the performance has no dialogue, so it translates to all languages.
Seven Brothers is Turku Student Theatre’s off-production. The performance is directed by Lukas Priklopil, being part of his Drama Education studies.

Seven Brothers – Kiireetön esitys ihmisen läsnäolosta
”Mutta kun olivat atrioineet, istuivat he taasen mikä minnekin ja mikä mitäkin mietiskellen, tai katsellen eteensäavattuun kirjaan. Perä-akkunan ääressä, joka antoi länteen päin, istui Aapo, askarrellen nysänsä kanssa, ja näkyi kuin olis hänen aatoksensa syventynyt tärkeään asiaan.” (A. Kivi, Seitsemän veljestä)
Aleksis Kiven romaani Seitsemän veljestä (1870) on suomalaisen kirjallisuuden merkittävimpiä teoksia. Romaani kertoo seitsemän orvoksi jääneen nuoren miehen elämästä 1800-luvun maalais-Suomessa. Kymmenen vuoden aikana veljekset rakentavat taloja, viljelevät maita, metsästävät eläimiä, tappelevat, saunovat, opettelevat lukemaan, sekä kertovat toisilleen mukaansatempaavia tarinoita.
16.6.2018 ensi-iltansa saava Seven Brothers -esitys kuvaa yhden tavallisen kesäillan tunnelmaa seitsemän veljeksen talossa. Se on kiireetön esitys, jonka keskiössä on ihmisen läsnäolo.
Vaikka mitään erityistä ei tunnu tapahtuvan, silti tapahtuu loputtoman paljon. Mitäänsanomaton, yksinkertainen toiminto tai ääni voi pian tuntua äärimmäisen merkitykselliseltä ja monipuoliselta. Ihminen tekee jokaisesta hetkestä mielenkiintoisen.
Esitys on pelkistetty kaikin keinoin, jotta ihmisen läsnäolo nousisi pääosaan. Esityksessä ei käytetä sähkövaloja, maskeerausta tai rooliasuja. Esityksessä ei ole dialogia, joten esitys soveltuu kaikenkielisille.
Seven Brothers on Turun ylioppilasteatterin off-produktio. Esityksen ohjauksesta vastaa Lukas Priklopil, jolle produktio on myös osa draamakasvatuksen aineopintoja.
